Frequently Asked Questions About Orthodontics

Initial Visit

Do you charge for an initial visit?

No, your initial visit is complimentary. We’re happy to provide a free orthodontic evaluation as a courtesy to you and your general dentist.

At what age do you start seeing patients?

We follow the American Association of Orthodontists’ guidelines, which recommend an evaluation around age 7.

Why do you evaluate patients so young?

Early evaluations allow us to monitor jaw development and spot potential concerns before they progress. Most young patients don’t require immediate treatment—we simply observe and educate parents along the way.

How long will the first visit take, and is the orthodontist consultation included?

The initial appointment typically lasts 60 minutes. It may include a visual exam and diagnostic records, followed by a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Dalia Shlash to review findings and next steps.

Do you take patients transferring from out of town?

Yes! We welcome transfer patients and will tailor a treatment plan based on your current progress.

Do you have any adult braces patients in your practice?

Absolutely. Many adults are choosing to straighten their teeth using modern solutions such as Invisalign or braces.

What is the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist, and who should I see for teeth alignment?

Orthodontists receive three years of specialized training beyond dental school to focus on learning the mechanics to safely straighten teeth and correcting the occlusion (bite) and provide patients with the most ideal treatment outcome.  For orthodontic treatment like braces or Invisalign, it’s best to see an orthodontist.

Can I make all my appointments in the afternoon after school and late in the day?

We try to accommodate your schedule as much as possible. While longer procedures may be scheduled during mid-day hours (10 a.m. – 2:30p.m.), we reserve early morning and late afternoon slots for shorter visits when available.

Do you see patients for emergencies?

Yes. If you’re experiencing an orthodontic emergency, contact our office. Instructions and after-hours contact information are provided on our website and voicemail.

Financial and Insurance

Can we make payments for braces and Invisalign over time?

Yes. We offer flexible payment plans whether or not you have dental insurance.

How do you handle insurance, especially when planning for the cost of braces or Invisalign cost?

Once we confirm your benefits, we’ll bill your insurance provider directly. If coverage changes or ends, you’re still responsible for the agreed-upon balance.

Do you accept credit card payments?

Yes, we accept Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and other major credit cards.

Do you have a direct debit?

Yes. Automatic payments can be arranged through direct debit, credit card, or our online payment portal.

Do you charge interest?

No. We offer interest-free financing to make orthodontic care as accessible as possible.

Types of Orthodontic Treatment

What is Phase 1 Treatment and how does it help?

Phase 1 treatment begins while some baby teeth are still present. It’s designed to correct early issues like crossbites or jaw growth concerns, often reducing the complexity of treatment later.

What is Phase 2 Treatment?

Phase 2 treatment starts once all or most permanent teeth are present. Lasting about 18–24 months, it involves fine-tuning alignment with braces or Invisalign to ensure a healthy, lasting smile.

How do I know two-phase treatment is necessary?

Not every child needs two-phase treatment. After a thorough evaluation and diagnostic records, we’ll let you know if it’s the best option for your child.

Moving of Teeth (Mechanics)

I need to be pre-medicated for the dentist. Do I need to take my medicine for the orthodontist?

Possibly. Check with your physician or Dr. Shlash before your visit to confirm.

How long do braces take, and what is the typical orthodontic treatment timeline?

Most treatments take about two years, but the exact length depends on your individual case.

How do braces or Invisalign aligners actually move your teeth into place?

Braces or Invisalign aligners apply gentle, controlled force to reposition teeth over time. Dr. Shlash customizes your plan for safe, efficient results.

Do you use recycled braces?

No. We use only brand-new, high-quality orthodontic appliances for every patient.

Wisdom Teeth (Third Molars)

Do wisdom teeth cause teeth to get crooked?

There’s limited evidence that wisdom teeth cause crowding. Other factors typically play a larger role in shifting.

Why do wisdom teeth need to be removed before or after jaw alignment treatment?

Impacted wisdom teeth may lead to infections or gum issues. Removal is often recommended even if they don’t cause crowding.

When is a good time to have wisdom teeth removed?

Most oral surgeons suggest removal when roots are about two-thirds developed, usually between ages 16 and 18.

Orthodontic Retainers

Do retainers after braces or Invisalign need to be worn long-term?

Yes. You’ll wear removable retainers full-time for the first two weeks, then nightly for a lifetime to maintain your results.  The same retainer will not last forever, and will need to be replaced at an additional fee due if worn, broken, or lost.

Why do teeth get crooked after wearing braces or clear aligners?

Teeth naturally shift without retainers. Consistent nightly wear for a lifetime is key to keeping your teeth aligned.

How about retainers glued to the backs of teeth?

Bonded retainers, placed behind the upper or lower front teeth, can offer additional support of the teeth but make it more difficult for patients to floss and keep clean. Clear retainers must be worn over the bonded retainers to maintain proper alignment of the remaining teeth. We often only recommend bonded retainers for specific situations due to the difficulty involved in maintaining ideal oral hygiene.

Temporomandibular Disorders (TMJ)

Can braces or orthodontic treatment treat or cause TMJ problems?

There is no clear connection between orthodontic treatment and TMJ disorders. These conditions may develop independently of your bite.

Health Impact

What are the health benefits of wearing clear braces for adults or teens?

Straight teeth improve oral hygiene, chewing efficiency, and dental symmetry. Orthodontic care can contribute to better overall health.

How does a tongue thrust or low tongue posture affect braces?

Improper tongue posture can push teeth forward or cause spacing issues. Addressing it can improve the success of orthodontic treatment.
