First Visit at Shlash Orthodontics
We’re excited to welcome you to your first appointment at Shlash Orthodontics! From the moment you arrive, our friendly team is here to make your visit smooth and stress-free. Just check in at the front desk, and we’ll take it from there.
During this visit, Dr. Shlash will conduct a detailed orthodontic exam and review the findings with you and your family, one-on-one. We’ll also take photographs and X-rays, and review your medical and dental history to help guide your treatment recommendations.
Why Is the Initial Orthodontist Consulation Important?
The goal of your first visit is simple: to give you answers. You’ll leave with a better understanding of your smile and whether orthodontic treatment is needed.
Here’s what we’ll cover during your first exam:
Is there an orthodontic issue, and if so, what kind?
When is the best time to start treatment?
What treatment options are available?
How long will treatment take?
What will the cost be?
What insurance benefits or payment plans apply?
What Comes Next?
If we determine that orthodontic treatment is appropriate, we’ll finalize your treatment plan and schedule an appointment to place your new appliance(s)—sometimes even on the same day. This “start” appointment usually takes 1 to 1.5 hours. At all times, our team will put you at ease to make this process smooth and comfortable.
These important tools help us map out the best path forward for your smile. They include:
Photographs of your teeth and smile
Panoramic and cephalometric X-rays
A personalized review by our doctor to design a custom treatment plan
Understanding the Cost of Treatment
The cost of orthodontic care depends on the complexity of your case. If treatment is needed, our treatment coordinator will review all fees and discuss flexible payment options.
At Shlash Orthodontics, our goal is to make orthodontic treatment accessible and budget-friendly. We accept most insurance plans and offer several payment plans to fit your needs.
What Does Your Investment Cover?
We believe in transparent, all-inclusive care. Here’s what’s included in your treatment:
Orthodontic records, including all necessary X-rays, intraoral scans, and a customized growth analysis
Active treatment, using expansion therapy, braces or Invisalign
Appliances and all procedures completed in-office
One set of final retainers after your treatment is complete
Need an extra retainer? Replacements are available for an additional fee.
What’s Not Included?
To keep your expectations clear, please note that the following items are not included in your treatment investment:
Services performed outside of our orthodontic office
Fees related to unexpected conditions such as TMJ complications, jaw injuries, or surgical requirements that may arise during treatment
Insurance and Assignment of Benefits
We work with many insurance plans and often accept assignment of benefits, which can significantly reduce your out-of-pocket expenses.
If your plan changes during your treatment, just let us know as soon as possible so we can update your records and keep your coverage on track.
Follow-Up Appointments and Ongoing Care
Orthodontic treatment generally takes 12–24 months. To stay on track, you’ll need to come in every 4–8 weeks for appliance adjustments. These appointments are scheduled at the end of each visit or by contacting our front desk. We’ll always do our best to make these visits as convenient as possible and will work with you if rescheduling is necessary.
General Dental Care During Orthodontic Treatment
It is important to continue visiting your family dentist every 6 months for regular cleanings and checkups. Your dentist and orthodontist work together to keep your teeth and gums healthy throughout treatment.
Our Office Hours and Appointment Guidelines
We value your time and work hard to stay on schedule. Your appointment time is reserved just for you, to complete your procedure, share updates, and answer your questions.
To help keep the day running smoothly:
Please arrive on time
Let us know if you are running late or need to reschedule
Thank you for being respectful of everyone’s time. We appreciate it.
FAQ
What Should I Bring To My First Orthodontic Appointment?
If possible, bring your dental insurance information, a list of current medications, and any recent X-rays or records from your dentist. For children and teens, a parent or guardian should attend to review treatment options and consents together.
Do I Need A Referral From My Dentist To Schedule A First Visit?
No referral is required to see an orthodontist at Shlash Orthodontics. Many patients are referred by their dentist, but you are also welcome to schedule an initial consultation on your own if you have concerns about your bite or smile.
Can Parents Or Family Members Come Into The Consultation Room?
Yes, we encourage parents or family members to join the consultation, especially for younger patients. This allows everyone to hear the doctor’s findings, ask questions, and understand the recommended treatment plan.
How Long Will My First Visit Take?
Most first visits last between 30-60 minutes from check-in to checkout. This gives us enough time to take photos and X-rays, complete the exam, and explain findings and next steps without rushing.
What If I Feel Nervous About Starting Orthodontic Treatment?
It is completely normal to feel a little anxious at first. Our team will explain each step, answer your questions, and move at a pace that feels comfortable. Many patients find that once they understand the process, their worries quickly fade.
